Its remote location, based some “five miles away” from the main data center, according to Gates, includes a pSeries* 650, a Powe r 55 0 a nd a n olde r H8 0 (scheduled to be replaced by a new Power Systems server). ProHealth also has a host of mission-critical applications, including an ER P suite from Lawson Software (using WebSphere* a s a n appl icat ion portal) for payroll, human resources, materials management, payables a nd ge ne r a l le dge r; ma ny GE Healthcare solutions, including Groupcast for billing; Eclipsys’ Su n r ise Pat ient Fi na ncia ls; Kronos Timekeeper; Healthcare Cost Consultants; and Sunquest L a b o r a t o r y. P r o H e a l t h h a s a database it dubs “Enter prise Data Warehouse,” which, according to Gates, was developed in house. ProHealth uses SeeBeyond’s eGate to integrate many of these systems. Previously, this meant backing ever ything up to tape and taking the tapes off-site in a BUSINESS: Healthcare provider rotat ion c ycle. We might have CHALLENGE: Improving backup and had to restore a file here and there, recovery procedures but we never had to do a f u ll SOLUTION: Moving from tape-only backups restore.” to system-to-system backups using the Finding an accidentally deleted EchoStream for AIX file was a hassle, in part because ProHea lt h sent t he tapes to a third-party tape-storage company. As Gates explains, “With tape, we’d have to get someone to bring bac k ups to u s—a nd t here wa s a fee. If we needed something from that day, we’d have the tape on-site, so no big deal, but if it were something from a couple of days ago, we’d have to work with the storage vendor to bring what we needed to us. It was a hassle and expensive.” Hoping to never travel that road w it h backup tapes, ProHea lt h decided to find a more efficient and reliable way to back up its systems, data and applications.
