IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 - (Page 13) A Berbee representative installed the software and configured it to replicate ProHealth’s core applications and databases. One of these was the Lawson ERP application running on an AIX OS-based server. Because this server not only ran Lawson, but also hosted the related database and WebSphere*, the entire system was, and still is, replicated. In other cases, such as with Kronos, ProHealth replicated only databases. As Gates explains, “Kronos runs on several Windows* technology-based ser vers, but the database itself is on an A IX server. So the important thing for us was to protect the data. We could always reinstall the application itself, but the data simply couldn’t be lost. That was our thought process throughout, looking at what needed to be replicated and what didn’t need to be replicated.” Be cau se t he r e a r e fe we r se r ve r s at t he r e mote locat ion , P r oHea lt h doesn’t c lone box to box . I n stead , during the configuration process the organization decided to carve partitions out of the backup boxes and designate which data and which applications were to go where. When making this decision, ProHealth chose to clone only missioncritical applications, such as Lawson, GroupCast, Eclipsys and Sunquest. All data, however, is replicated. and applies the data to the remote backup boxes. This occurs, according to Gates, every five or 10 minutes. If something were to go wrong with a production server, the most ProHealth would lose is the amount of data generated within that time period. Gates says an actual role swap would take only 15 to 20 minutes to complete if there were no data corruptions. If there are such corruptions, “you have to run a file system check, so it might take a little longer depending on the size of the file system. If you can’t recover from the corruption, the software allows you to roll back in time to a spot before the corruption took place, like an hour, two hours or, depending on your log files, an entire day,” Gates continues. “But if it’s just a hardware problem, you can get back up and running very quickly.” Gates and his team r un quar terly fa i lover s to ma ke su re ever y t h i ng is work ing as it should, and so far, they haven’t r un into any problems. I f some t h i ng we r e to h appe n to a production ser ver, Gates is confident they can make the switch to the backup box with no or few problems. This is important, because ProHealth has to prove to auditors that a recover y is possible. “They want to make sure you have at least a tape backup, but we’ve gone much beyond that,” Gates says. It also renamed the product, now calling it EchoSt ream for A I X. Despite t he acquisition and renaming, ProHealth con side r e d t he pr oduc t wor t h y of continued use, citing Vision’s larger support footprint as a contributing factor. “It’s a bigger company, so the support is better,” Gates notes. Since then, ProHealth uses EchoStream to replicate its data under the umbrella of “continuous data protection.” The software works by monitoring log files. When the log files fill up, EchoStream transfers AN INSURANCE POLICY Gates won’t put an ROI on implementing a solution such as Vision’s EchoStream for AIX, in part because he considers it peace of mind rather than a money saver. In fact, he, Schanau and Yang are actually putting more time into making sure the system cloning is working. But as Gates puts it, “I look at it as an insurance policy. It’s as simple as that.” Jim Utsler, IBM Systems Magazine senior writer, has been covering technology for more than a decade. Jim can be reached at jutsler@msptechmedia.com.
