IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 - (Page 17) Ig^Va8d9 allows you to evaluate the use of inactive process or memory at no charge. This is available for a 30-day interval and is great for workload testing and capacity planning. Dc$D[[8d9 lets you temporarily activate and deactivate CPUs or RAM to meet the peaks and valleys of your workloads. You can start and stop these requests at any time, and you’re only billed for usage at the end of each quarter. You can use this for as little as one day. Ji^a^in8d9 allows you to deliver increased capacity from the shared processor pool. This is best for unpredictable environments that need a cost-effective way of ensuring server resources are available. You can purchase as little as one minute at a time. 8VeVX^in7VX`jeuses CoD to provide for off-site businesscontinuity services. It allows a minimum set of active processes to be activated in case of a disaster. A minimum number of free processor days are provided with capacity backup. This is available with IBM’s high-end Power 595 server and IBM’s PowerHA* (which we’ll discuss further in the next section). The PowerHA cluster automatically detects the loss of production systems, which in turn enables the system activation. High Availability High Availability was previously provided through IBM’s High Availability Cluster Multiprocessing (HACMP*), wh ich is now rebranded as PowerH A for A I X. T h is software provides businesses with the capability to recover quickly from planned and unplanned outages. We all know the benefits of recovering from unplanned outages, but sometimes it’s the planned outages that hurt the most. You must apply OS, firmware and sometimes application-level patches at some point in time. PowerHA allows you to perform your maintenance without bringing down your application for an extended period of time. PowerHA for AIX is a mature solution that’s been available for more than 15 years. It even runs on Linux, with HACMP V5.4 or higher. PowerHA can be configured to respond to all types of system events—I/O, network interface card (NIC) or server outages. The essence of PowerHA is that a partition falls over to another partition (the partitions should be on separate servers) when an event is triggered. With PowerHA on AIX, up to 32 nodes can be configured, with Linux up to eight nodes. A great selling point to PowerHA on the Power Systems platform is that the PowerHA Cluster Manager offers a consistent face AP RIL/MA Y 2 009 i bms ystemsmag . com /aix 17 http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/aix Table of Contents for the Digital Edition of IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems — AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 Editor's Desk: High-Flying Security Focus of Storage: Solid-State Disks Will Become Integral to Many Enterprise Storage Infrastructures Case Study: ProHealth Care Improves Backup and Recovery Processes by Deploying a Near Real-time Mirroring Solution.
