IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 - (Page 18) around availability for both their AIX and Linux customers running on Power Systems. PowerHA/XD software—the disaster-recovery version of the product—extends the system’s capabilities by allowing data replication across geographically dispersed locations. With AIX 6.1, geographical logical volume manager (GLVM) is functionally enhanced to provide asynchronous replication support—enabling you to deploy a multiple site, disasterrecovery solution with PowerHA/XD. Combining PowerHA with SAN Volume Controller (SVC) enables storage-operations centralization and provides a robust high-availabilit y or d i s a s te r-r e c ov e r y s olu t ion v i a Me t r o M i r r or or Global Mirror. IBM offers consulting ser vices for clients including planning, designing, installing and configuring clusters, and assisting with applications like Oracle and WebSphere*. They’ll help you create and test application plans and develop monitoring strategies. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager also provides recover ymanagement capabilities. High-availability products outside I BM include Veritas Cluster Ser v ices for A I X, LifeKeeper High Availabi lit y Clu ster i ng by Steel Eye and more recently, EchoCluster/ EchoStream by Vision Solutions. Live Partition Mobility is formally a pa r t of PowerV M (on P OW E R 6 p r o c e s s o r s only) , but it could be said that this is a RAS feature, as it adds to the server farm’s availability. This feature relies on the POWER6 and POWER Hyper visor technology, and isn’t available on POWER5* servers. It allows you to move entire running partitions from one server to another. This isn’t a high-availability product, because it isn’t meant for unplanned outages, only for planned outages. In addition to availability, it can be used for workload balancing. It’s important to note neither Sun nor HP has this technology. Additionally, many other features of PowerVM (including ones that are available on the POWER5) also add to overall resiliency. They include; Micro-Partitioning*, virtual I/O servers, shared processor pools in the form of uncapped partitions and integrated virtual Ethernet (IVE). Live Application Mobility is a feature for AIX only (it’s not available on Linux) that allows you to move entire workloads from one frame to another. Used in conjunction with IBM’s Workload Partition (WPAR) Manager for AIX, it enables you to move W PA Rs to less-busy ser vers dur ing peak periods, which provides optimum flexibility and workload utilization. WPARs are a standard feature of AIX 6 and essentially support OS partitioning. Traditional partitioning in a Power Systems environment involves the use of logical partitioning with each partition having its own OS. IBM Systems Director 6.1 provides a consistent console interface for those who require greater manageability across their data centers. It effectively streamlines how physical and virtual servers are managed across one consistent interface. It even integrates with products such as Active Energy Manager (with a plug-in), to help you manage energy and cooling for all systems in the data center. Certain HMC and integrated virtualization manager (IVM) functionality is included to help deploy, monitor and optimize both physical and logical resources on Power Systems. Systems Director can help manage storage—including the IBM System Storage* DS4000* and high-end DS6000* series, as well as Remote ut IT director thinks abo A proactive ss and in terms of the busine resiliency ent of the effective deploym how siliency. y will increase that re technolog Storage Manager. Electronic Ser v ice Agent (ESA) , available for A I X, Linux and IBM i, provides automatic problem reporting by monitor ing and collecting your systems’ data and subsequently sends the data to IBM support. It collects hardware, software, systems configuration and even performance-management information—all of which can help IBM support determine your problem. The free software continuously runs on a user-configurable basis. It works in tandem with your IBM support agreement. ESA helps your environment become more resilient by increasing your capability to proactively resolve potential problems 18 AP RIL/MA Y 2 009 i bms ystemsmag . com /aix http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/aix Table of Contents for the Digital Edition of IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems — AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 Editor's Desk: High-Flying Security Focus of Storage: Solid-State Disks Will Become Integral to Many Enterprise Storage Infrastructures Case Study: ProHealth Care Improves Backup and Recovery Processes by Deploying a Near Real-time Mirroring Solution.
