IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 - (Page 23) applications, databases and storage devices can be very high. This is particularly true in cases where individual boxes are dedicated to a single task. And that’s a simple example. Many larger companies have hundreds if not thousands of such servers deployed in single-job configurations—and each one must be managed and administered. To address such ser ver sprawl—and any associated maintenance costs—and embrace dynamic infrastructure, Power Systems have advanced virtualization capabilities, in the form of PowerVM*, built into them. So instead of r unning single ser vers for single jobs, companies can now devote far fewer ser vers—at much lower hardware, systems management and software licensing costs—to many more jobs. This is true even within mixed-OS environments. Many Power Systems users are likely to run multiple OSs on their servers, including IBM i, AIX* and Linux*. Dynamic infrastructure accepts and encourages this type of mixing and matching of OSs, even though each OS has its own particular traits and is likely installed for specific workloads in real-world operating environments. “This truly represents the concept of dynamic infrastructure, when you’re running multiple workloads on one system through virtualization and getting better management and energy utilization out of that solution,” Handy says. Within the dynamic infrastructure realm, virtualization goes beyond server images (which might be enough). It also comes into play with storage. Virtual I/O servers run in their own LPARs on every Power server, and within that, users can set up virtual networks that other virtual servers can access. Alternatively, users can set up single servers accessing a storage-area network (SAN) and the multiple storage devices on the SAN back end. “There’s a lot of f lexibility regarding this, because we’ve virtualized storage interfaces so you can connect many to one, one to many or many to many,” Handy says. “And when you move a running workload from one physical server to another, its storage connections will follow, allowing for a dynamically shifting computing environment. No other UNIX* environment has this capability, which we call Live Partition Mobility and which is included in PowerVM Enterprise Edition.” ÂÃÄ ÅÆÇÈÄÂÉÂÉÄ ÄÄ ÂÃÄÅÆÃÇ ÉÃÆÃ ÆÃÉÃ ÄÃÆÃ ÄÅÉÄÉ Ä !
