IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 - (Page 24) Seamless and Invisible This may sound like a lot of expensive behind-the-scenes administrative work, but it’s not thanks to the Dynamic Infrastructure operational model. IBM Systems Director helps make managing this type of virtualized environment easy and inexpensive. Featuring built-in cooperation with the IBM Software Group and Tivoli* group, Systems Director lets companies have more dynamic control over their IT infrastructures. For example, companies can use it to actively balance workloads across a single, physical virtualized server or even move virtualized workloads from one physical server to another. This lets users shift workloads between physical servers, so when one is being taken down for routine maintenance, there’s still 100-percent application availability. “This means you don’t have to conduct planned maintenance downtime on weekends, when it’s normally done, but instead, during the middle of the day,” Handy says. “This allows organizations to keep operating even as their IT department takes down servers for whatever reason. System administrators just love this feature.” Systems Director also includes the Active Energy Manager, which can also be ordered as a separate module. This solution allows for the administration of energy use across pooled resources. Users can, for example, use it to put caps on how much energy particular servers are allowed to use. In a shared environment, those types of caps can be applied to multiple servers as part of a group. “Active Energy Manager users can save up to 30 percent on their energy bills, without impacting performance,” Handy says. “And this isn’t insignificant. In some cases, the local grid simply can’t supply all of the power they need, and even if it can, the costs can be very high, especially if data-center assets are being underutilized.” Because Systems Director works well in shared-resource environments, it’s perfect for the management of dynamic infrastructure-enabled cloud-based computing. When operating in that environment, users don’t care where their applications or data reside, as long as they’re available when they need them. Customers looking to virtualize not only on single servers but across pools of servers can get experience now with key technologies for moving workloads across servers and managing energy across the pools of servers. Technologies like Live Partition Mobility, Live Application Mobility and Active Energy Manager are precursors to upcoming Systems Director technology that allow the automation of these functions. Systems Director “ensembles” will allow for the dynamic allocation or reallocation of resources behind the scenes, with virtualized partitions being moved on the fly and energy being directed to where its most needed, all without disruption to end users. This can dramatically increase service-level expectations. “Ever ything looks like a single resource, thanks to virtualization. Because of that, we can manage energy across a pool of servers, applications across a pool of servers and, because we’re also virtualizing storage, we can even move storage as workloads move,” Handy says. “It’s seamless and invisible to end users.” Several key middleware components, including WebSphere* and Tivoli sof t ware, suppor t vir tualization. The A IX Enterprise Edition also includes some Tivoli components that automatically discover servers on the network, keep track of which applications are running on which servers and determine application dependencies based on prerequisite applications. “Using these tools, IT managers can cut back on the more hands-on and costly approach typically associated with distributed-computing environments,” Handy says. Around the Clock and Secure Risks once related to low-transaction environments are no longer tolerable. Any downtime is harmful, with incoming transactions perhaps being lost if ser vers fail, leaving decision makers with fractured views of their overall business environments. This is especially crucial as end users come to expect a certain level of service. Users’ “right here, right now” data expectations are real, and they have little patience if IT disruptions impact their decision-making abilities. And any delay, no matter how momentary, can significantly disrupt normal business operations.
