IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 - (Page 25) ensure that organizations’ resources are available around the clock. In the Power Systems space, that translates into a PowerHA* solution, integrated high-availability software offered for IBM i, AIX and Linux. Using this solution, applications and data on one system are mirrored in real time to another. If there’s a failure on the primary production server, the other one will be used as an immediate failover server. This risk-management solution lets companies continue working with little or no disruption to everyday operations. For those concerned about security, PowerVM includes security layers between each virtual server running on either single physical servers or resource-sharing servers. Additionally, each supported OS, including IBM i, AIX and to meet CEO expectations, but are hampered by pressures related to issues such as complex IT management and costly energy consumption. Fortunately, IBM designed its dynamic infrastructure strategy to specifically address CEOs’ requirements for change and CIOs’ need to support those changes. “We’ve outlined for our clients a way to look at places where they can get better business value out of their existing IT infrastructure, as well as position them for the future, when there will be vastly more connected devices and vastly more information to manage,” Handy says. Handy cites an example where IBM was able to consolidate 39 Sun ser vers onto a single Power 595 ser ver. See “A Dynamic Example” (page 22) for details. The end result was “A lot of security is built in the Power Systems Software stack.” —Scott Handy, vice president, worldwide marketing and strategy, IBM Power Systems Linux, has its own built-in security solution. AIX users, for example, can set up individual application areas and configure more than 300 security settings within them. “You can determine who can access specific applications, who can access application-specific data, or who can change parameters,” Handy says. “A lot of security is built in the Power Systems Software stack. And that moves all the way up to the systems-management level and down to the database level. As with PowerHA, this helps reduce potential risks, which is especially important as more and more legal legislation is holding both companies and CXOs financially responsible for any data losses.” an 80-percent reduction in floor space, an 84-percent decrease in energy consumption and a near 90-percent drop in number of cores, which dramatically reduced the customer’s per-core licensing costs. End-to-End In today’s world of increasing information integration, no matter the source, it’s becoming ever more important that businesses adopt a new, dynamic approach to how they run their operations. They can no longer rely on siloed data centers with multiple unconnected servers devoted to single-purpose jobs to get things done. That model is too expensive and difficult to administer, making it unsustainable. In these days of the Internet of things, end-to-end solutions must meet the new challenges of data gathering, dissemination and analysis. But these solutions require innovative ways of thinking, including about resource allocation, energy use, business resiliency, security, service and asset management, and information infrastructure. IBM’s dynamic infrastructure strategy addresses these issues by offering solutions—not one-off tools—that help companies reduce costs, manage risks and improve services. AP RIL/MA Y 2 009 i bms ystemsmag . com /aix Extending Business Value IBM has been on the cutting edge of dynamic infrastructure for years. “IBM i running on Power is actually an integrated dynamic infrastructure; it’s dynamic infrastructure in a box,” Handy says. “It’s one single environment, fully integrated. It’s already got the virtualization, the security, the virus protection all built in—you don’t have to install it—so it’s incredibly reliable. More than 90 percent of i customers use virtualization, which is higher than any of our other systems. We’re just extending the dynamic infrastructure idea even further.” For many, a strong and deliberate move toward dynamic infrastructure can’t come quickly enough. Many CEOs plan business-model changes, but they’re not sure how to best address them. CIOs, on the other hand, know what they need 25 http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/aix Table of Contents for the Digital Edition of IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems — AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 Editor's Desk: High-Flying Security Focus of Storage: Solid-State Disks Will Become Integral to Many Enterprise Storage Infrastructures Case Study: ProHealth Care Improves Backup and Recovery Processes by Deploying a Near Real-time Mirroring Solution.
