IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 - (Page 26) Administrator Getting the most from your systems A Systems-Management Approach to Symmetric and Asymmetric Keys BY JIM PORELL AND PAUL TURNER F ear of data theft, a deluge of new regulations and many highly publicized breaches have led executives to mandate increased data security in their data centers/IT environments. While encryption technologies have become the de facto best practice for protecting both active and stored data, far too many companies are still managing encryption and the associated keys manually, if at all. Organizations struggle to effectively maintain—to inventory, monitor and manage—increasing numbers of encr yption certificates and keys in use across their environments. In general, many of the most sophisticated IT departments rely on spreadsheets and reminder notes to track keys and certificates on mission-critical systems. These manual processes often result in unanticipated security issues or system outages, which can bring entire business systems to a halt. System failure, data loss, security lapses and noncompliance with regulations and industry standards are among the common consequences of poor encryption management that ultimately lead to lost revenue and costly reputation damage. To address these challenges, IBM and Venaf i, a leader in systems management for encr yption, have joined forces to help organizations better manage encryption across their diverse operating environments—through a holistic, platform approach to delivering and managing encr yption keys for IBM tape and disk-storage systems as well as other systems. This ar ticle offers a brief summar y of key-encr y ption technologies and addresses the challenges organizations in all markets face as they try to manage the growing deployment of and dependency on keys and certificates. i bms ystemsmag . com /aix Business Accelerates the Mandate to Encrypt We begin by asking a fundamental question: Why encrypt? Because history has proven that although organizations have deployed sophisticated access control, intrusion-prevention, vulnerability and other security solutions, it’s still too easy to lose data. This is evidenced by dramatic losses of millions of ident it ies i n t he reta i l a nd f i na ncia l ser v ices industries, as well as within governments. Let’s look at an example of how customer-identity information that’s securely stored in a database can easily end up replicated in myriad other places, exposing it to additional loss and theft risk. First, the data is backed up to tape and eventually stored off-site. It’s also copied to a data warehouse for mining and analysis. The same data is sent across the Internet to a business partner who provides affiliate services. Customers regularly access the data electronically from the Web. One or more business analysts may copy it to laptops and/or USB drives for additional analysis. And lastly, the data may be replicated for use in a development system or test environment. It’s clear there’s never just one copy of data, and in many cases, access and authorization policies against each of those data instances are inconsistent. This scenario doesn’t cover all of the intermediate systems (such as storage managers, Web servers, application servers and other middleware) that the data passes through en route to each destination. This is why access control and other security systems are challenged to protect the data in your environment and, consequently, why we’ve seen so many data breaches.
