If your business has its own internal, encryption key-management policies and is subject to one or more external regulations or standards (like PCI), key management across a diverse enterprise environment can be quite a challenge. The need to magnify this complexity is the driving force behind the technology partnership between IBM and Venafi. IBM and Venafi automated these processes across many different systems so you can effectively leverage encryption to protect your mission-critical data. Let’s start by looking at IBM’s offering. Venafi enables organizations to automate all aspects of encryption and key management, automatically deploying certificates and keys and configuring applications. Storage Encryption and Symmetric Key Management IBM Tivoli* Key Lifecycle Manager (TKLM) provides full lifecycle management of encryption keys for tape and disk systems. TKLM acts as a central server that issues requests for keys from tape, disk and other storage systems or applications. It works with both IBM and non-IBM storage devices, including LTO-4 and 3592-based tape systems. TKLM simplifies the process of assuring data is protected and keys are properly managed, and was designed for use by administrators who aren’t necessarily encryption experts. It ships with a GUI to simplify management and tracking. Depending on the type of storage system being served, TKLM will either use symmetrickey encryption or a combination of symmetric-key and publickey encryption to protect data and keys. TKLM is ideal for tape applications where tapes are stored off-site for backup or used to transport data between organizations. Venafi provides a systems-management platform to help organizations simplif y the management of encr y ption technologies across their diverse infrastructure environments, from the desktop to the data center. Venafi products help organizations perform four progressively more valuable operations based on policies they def ine. First, Venaf i software automatically inspects systems to discover the encryption technologies in place and catalogs the encryption certificates and keys it discovers. Next, the system can monitor discovered and previously known certificates and keys, and alert administrators of upcoming expirations or required rollover deadlines to ensure they are maintained in a timely manner. Venafi can also be used to manage the lifecycle workflow of certificate enrollment with one or more certificate authorities that are required to renew encryption certificates. Finally, 28 AP RIL/MA Y 2 009 i bms ystemsmag . com /aix Venafi and IBM Join Forces As a result of the partnership between Venafi and IBM, Venafi offers a combined solution that includes both IBM TKLM and the Venafi platform. The resulting product–Venafi Key Lifecycle Manager with IBM TKLM Onboard (VKLM)–includes IBM’s TKLM software and the Venafi systems management for encryption platform, delivering a unique new offering to the market. The Venafi management platform is currently used by many of the world’s leading organizations to automate digital certificates and related key management across many enterprise applications and systems, including IBM WebSphere* Application Server, IBM HTTP Server, IBM Tivoli Access Manager, IBM WebSphere MQ server and client, as well as applications and platforms from many other vendors. This enables organizations to provide consistent management across their broad enterprise environments and infrastructure, from tape and storage systems to servers, network devices and laptops. In addition, VKLM augments TKLM by automatically provisioning, monitoring, managing and backing up the certificates TKLM uses to protect symmetric keys. Modern IT organizations need a holistic enterprise-encryption and key-management platform to address data security in a comprehensive manner, including managing encryption keys used to encrypt tape and disk environments, as well as other critical systems and applications in their infrastructure. The new IBM/Venafi solution helps organizations automate the tedious processes required to manage the lifecycle of encryption assets and reduces the risk of data loss, system downtime and noncompliance.
