IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 - (Page 5) Editor’s Desk Inside this month’s issue High-Flying Security O n a recent tr ip to Austin, Texas, I went through a slew of activities, all in the name of airport security. On the first f light, my carry-on bag was checked at the door of the airplane since there was no room in the overhead storage compar tments. W hen I ar r ived at my layover destination, I had to go outside of airport security to the baggage-claim area to get my luggage. I then went back through security to board my next flight, even though I hadn’t been more than 50 yards from the airport-security gate. As I was removing my shoes and unpacking my laptop for the second time that day, I couldn’t help but think back to when you could bring a pocketknife on board an airplane, as long as it fit in the palm of your hand. Oh how things have changed; now you can’t even bring more than three ounces of liquid past the airport security gate. Although I’m complaining quite a bit, I realize all these hoops are better than the alternative: driving thousands of miles or being the victim of a security breach. These airport policies are in place for one reason—our own safety. Well-publicized incidents of intrusion and data theft have changed the way companies protect their data and IT environments. Encr y ption technologies have become a best practice for data-center security, but managing the associated keys can be just as complicated and time consuming as going through airport security. Turn to page 26 for tips on encryption-key management. The move to electronic medical records has made the need for a hospital’s secure IT infrastructure even more important.
