IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 - (Page 8) Focus on Storage to under-used cells. Wear leveling employs over provisioning, but with smart data movement, with writes being shared across the flash memory. According to Barrera, these technologies can extend the life of SSDs, up to the typical life span of HDDs. “When you deploy these types of smart technologies, you can improve the life for the entire DRAM/flash drive to three to five years, which is perfectly adequate. If the drive can last that long, it’ll be obsolete by that time and you’ll want to replace it anyway.” Because SSDs are capable of many more operations per second than HDDs, fewer are needed to address the 30,000-operationsper-second example. According to Barrera, a single SSD can handle that many transactions. If an enterprise wants 5 TB of storage capacity and the capability to handle high-volume transactions, it must deploy only 10 500 GB SSDs, instead of the 200 HDDs. (SSDs now typically come with a top capacity of 500 GBs.) “By the time you’re done, you’re looking at a somewhat cheaper deployment in terms of devices, energy savings and improved space usage,” Barrera says. Everything Automated Most enterprises won’t go solely with SSDs, in part because the higher price of compared to HDDs. For companies requiring the capability to handle many high-volume transactions, a mix of SSDs and HDDs may be the right choice. Both can be deployed in disk arrays and SANs and managed by the same storage- control software, such as the IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC). “Everything must be part of an automated, high-availability, high-integrity, auditable mechanism for data-storage management. Customers must be able to do backups, provisioning and associate storage with the correct applications,” Barrera notes. IBM already offers SSDs as an option in its IBM System Storage DS8000* storage devices and is considering offering it on the DS4000*. It also might deploy SSDs behind a system image such as SVC, as demonstrated by the Quicksilver proof of concept, which reached 1 million operations per second—“Something that may have taken 6,000 HDDs to achieve,” Barrera says. IBM has considered embedding SSDs directly into its servers, giving users clear paths as to what types of storage media to use. It’s clear SSDs will become part of many enterprise-storage infrastructures, particularly as they pertain to high-volume, small-data environments. This is despite the likelihood that SSD price points per GB are unlikely to reach those of HDDs in the near future. Although the notion of SSDs isn’t new, ongoing and future research into this type of storage—or memory, depending on how you look at it—is going to make the technology an integral part of most typical enterprise data centers. Jim Utsler, I BM Systems Magazine senior writer, has been covering technology for more than a decade. Jim can be reached at jutsler@ msptechmedia.com. SSDs on the DS8000 I BM offers solid state disks (SSDs) as an option in its System Storage* DS8000*. These Tier-0 drives are intended for high-priority, time-sensitive applications, such as credit-card or Since DS8000s with optional SSDs cost more than those without SSDs, it’s important the correct data be placed on the appropriate drives. IBM works closely with customers to configure their DS8000 systems to address the environmental needs and the types of data workloads, which helps clients make the most of their investment. The SSD option for the DS8000 can also be configured with RAID5 for high availability. The DS8000 program is closely aligned with the enterprise-ready IBM System z* mainframe, so the DS8000 is quick to support new System z functionality, including High Performance FICON (zHPF), Extended Address Volumes (EAVs) and many other innovative enhancements. “The DS8000 is architected for high levels of performance, and adding SSD and the aforementioned data-analysis and data-migration tools will boost performance even further. If you combine this with the zHPF on top of that, you can get an additional boost. As a result,” Marin says, “we’re now up to an 800-percent improvement in performance over the traditional Fibre Channel spinning disks. Our competitors simply can’t offer that.” —J.U. high-performance online-transaction processing. Although other storage vendors offered similar enterprise-class SSD options last year, they were putting SSDs into existing carriers and architectures, which, according to Allen Marin, IBM System Storage Marketing, were “designed for spinning disks.” IBM goes beyond that simplistic model by developing data-analysis tools and adding more intelligence to its existing set of data-management capabilities to help determine, for example, which data sets and volumes are best suited for which type of drive, whether spinning or solid state. “By analyzing actual application workloads, we’re able to determine what data can take advantage of these incredibly fast drives. We’re also enhancing our existing data-migration tools with new capabilities that will help customers more effectively migrate data from other disks once that data’s been identified as being suitable for SSDs,” Marin adds. 8 AP RIL/MA Y 2 009 i bms ystemsmag . com /aix http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/aix Table of Contents for the Digital Edition of IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems — AIX digital edition - April/May 2009 Editor's Desk: High-Flying Security Focus of Storage: Solid-State Disks Will Become Integral to Many Enterprise Storage Infrastructures Case Study: ProHealth Care Improves Backup and Recovery Processes by Deploying a Near Real-time Mirroring Solution.
